Painting 101

PAINTING 101

I see painting as more than just changing a room's color... I see it as a form of art, of expression! It also is kind of therapeutic to me... I love to see the transformation, to see the change... to make something ornidary extraordinary... beautiful.

So, here are my painting tips!
1. Don't Skip Steps: When it comes to painting you do not want to skip steps. Trust me, you will regret not priming that wall with tinted primer, or not using a quality bruch on that beautifl trim... Take the time to do it right and thoroughly the first time, so you will need to do it only once!
2. Use Quality Materials: I know, I know, we all have a very tight budget, but I have learned that when it comes to painting the quality of the materials do matter! Now, quality does not mean pricey... the best black spray paint I ever used costs .97 cents at Home Depot! Here are some of my "essential material" that guarantee a sucessfull progect:
  • BRUSHES: I use Purdy angled brushes. A set of three lasted me a couple years, you just need to be very diligent when it comes to cleaning it.
  • PRIMER: When I am painting a wall, I usuallyjust get Killz primer. However, it is whole different ball game when it comes to wood (furniture, trim, cabinets, etc). To ensure that the paint WILL STICK I sand, and I use the very nice (and a little pricey) primer from Sherwinn Williams; one can will last a very long time. I used a 1/3 can to prime my laundry room cabinets I check it out here:--------). I have a can of white primer, and one of tinted primer (dark) which will really help when using dark paints, such as red (oh, red is beautiful, but VERY unforgiving color... but this is for another post...)
  • PAINT: The kind and sheen of the paint you use depend on what you are painting. I buy most of my paint at Home Depot or Lowes, depending on which store is having a special on prices. I L-O-V-E the new paint that has primer on it, it really helps to give a professional look to your project and saves time!
  • ROLLERS: I like to use the 7" roller because it is lighter and it helps me work faster since I do not get that tired. Also it usually fits in hard to reach places, such as above closets, and spills less paint as your roll.
Again, these are my personal tips and preferences. The right or wrong of painting depends on whether you are happy or not with your finish project. I have a tendency to be very perfectionist (trust me, I pay for it DAILY), so with each project I have learned what works best for me, to make me happy when I am done with a project.

Please let me know if you have any questions! If I can, I would love to help you with your next project!
